Who would
be considered a good candidate?
Anyone over
the age of 18 for nearsightedness and/or
astigmatism, and anyone over the age of
21 for farsightedness. Patients must have
a realistic expectation of the final results.
What
results can I expect?
Results or
outcomes vary primarily with the level of
correction needed and/or patients age. Typically,
patients achieve 20/40 vision or better.
A second treatment is common with some prescriptions
to refine the correction. Patients that
are 38 years of age may have a slightly
modified outcome to help reduce the dependency
of reading glasses. This topic should be
discussed individually with the center.
Are
the results permanent?
Yes! Studies
over the past 25 years with RK and 11 years
with lasers show that the surgery is permanent.
How
long does the procedure take?
Treatment
for two eyes takes approximately 20 minutes.
However, your total time at the center will
be approximately 1 hour. This will allow
time for pre- and post-operative care.
When
can I return to normal activities?
Typically,
patients return to work and most activities
the very next day. Some patients enjoy going
out to dinner the same day of treatment.
We recommend no swimming in any contaminated
water within the first 2-1/2 weeks after
treatment.
Are
the procedures painful?
Typically,
patients state they felt no pain. Topical
drops are used to numb the eye. Post-operatively
there may be some sensation of scratchiness
during the first 24 hours.
Is
it possible to have both eyes treated at
the same time?
Yes. It is
the normal protocol.
What
discomforts can I expect?
As with any
surgery, there are some discomforts associated
with vision correction.
- Light
Sensitivity: The day of surgery you
will appreciate wearing sun shields
provided for you in a care kit. After
that, you may want to wear a pair of
regular sunglasses.
- Fluctuation
of Vision: This is very normal and will
be present only during the healing period.
- Nighttime
Driving Glare: This condition typically
will not keep you from driving and diminishes
within 1 to 3 weeks.
- Infection:
Drops are used before and after treatment
to eliminate this risk.
